Week 1 bettors got out of the gate early if they put their support behind NFL underdogs and they might be tempted to do the same with some big numbers on the board in Week 2. Last week pups were 9-6-1 against the spread with five of those underdogs winning outright.
As we turn the page, we see the biggest NFL underdog we’ve had since 2013 with the Miami Dolphins set as 19-point home dogs against the defending-champion New England Patriots. This is the biggest line pegged on the Pats since they were 20-point favourites against the Indianapolis Colts in 2011. Coming off an impressive Sunday Night Football win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, this big point spread against a Miami team that’s in utter disarray shouldn’t be shocking.
The Pats are set at +1000 to have a perfect 16-0 regular season, while the Dolphins are at +5000 to make the playoffs and +700 to go 0-16. About 77 percent of bettors like New England to cover the spread, but the Pats haven’t done well with these big numbers in the past. In the Tom Brady/Bill Belichick era New England has been favoured by at least 18 points five times and has yet to cover in those contests.
The other Week 2 point spread that warrants some attention has the Baltimore Ravens as 13.5-point favourites at home to the Arizona Cardinals and their rookie quarterback Kyler Murray. The kid led the Cardinals to a 18-point comeback in the fourth quarter that ended in a tie last week against Detroit. Murray and the Cardinals could have their work cut out for them in Baltimore though. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson paced Baltimore to a 59-10 blowout over Miami with five touchdowns and this squad can play some defence too. About 60 percent of bettors are siding with the Ravens against the spread.
In Los Angeles, the Saints are out for a measure of revenge when they visit the Rams in a rematch of the NFC Championship. That was the game that forced the league to revamp its pass interference challenge rules after the Saints were denied a trip to the Super Bowl thanks to a blown call. This time around the Rams are set as 2.5-point favourites, but 65 percent of early bets are on the Saints to cover, and there’s a lot of support on the Saints to win outright (+123).
Other popular bets this week include the Kansas City Chiefs as 8-point favourites at Oakland, the Minnesota Vikings as 3-point underdogs at Green Bay, and the Philadelphia Eagles as 1.5-point favourites at Atlanta.
Hockey fans, it’s time to get back in the game. Team over/under point totals are now live for every squad with the Tampa Bay Lightning sitting at the top of the class at 111.5 points, followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs at 103.5 points. Calgary checks in at over/under 98.5, Winnipeg is at 95.5 and Montreal is pegged at 89.5 points. The Ottawa Senators have a league-low total of just 68.5. The NHL pre-season schedule begins this weekend so watch out for game odds in the coming days. Bet at Bodog Now
