Oddsmakers were forced to make some major moves after former Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Andrew Luck announced his retirement last weekend. This also made major media outlets change their early-season preview with this major shakeup. With Luck, the Colts were considered a true contender in the AFC. They were set at -245 to make the playoffs with a regular-season win total of 9.5. After Luck’s announcement, the Colts are at +350 to make the post-season with a win total of 6.5. Indy is now a 50-1 longshot to win Super Bowl LIV as they finish of the exhibition schedule on Thursday as 3-point underdogs in Cincinnati.
With no team risking its first-string players or valuable backups, the last week in pre-season is strictly for depth players trying to earn jobs. In a way, that takes a lot of mystery out of these games, all of which will be played on Thursday. It also means you’ll see very low totals for these games – ranging from 32 points for Atlanta vs. Jacksonville and up to 37 points for Miami vs. New Orleans. Most of the early over/under wagers are predictably coming in over the posted totals.
This week the Baltimore Ravens are the biggest favourite on the board at -6 as they visit Washington. The Ravens opened as just a field goal favourite, but savvy bettors are all over the visitors as Baltimore looks for its 17th straight pre-season victory. Dating back to 2017, the Ravens are on a 10-2 run against the spread in exhibition play.
The regular season kicks off next Thursday with an NFC North battle between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. The visiting Packers are seeing better than 60 percent of the early betting action as a 3-point underdog at Soldier Field. You’ll find all of Week 1’s odds live now at Bovada (New players get a $250 welcome bonus!).
With NHL training camps nearing, bettors are starting to dip into the Stanley Cup odds. The Tampa Bay Lightning remain favourites at +750, ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs (+800) and the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins at +1000 apiece. Vegas has seen more action recently and the Colorado Avalanche are also seeing steady support at +1200. Bettors also like the Calgary Flames at +1700, Winnipeg Jets at +2000 and the Pittsburgh Penguins at +2200. Sports Interaction has already opened lines for the opening-night matchups of the regular season, pegging the Leafs as a -150 favourite at home to the Ottawa Senators. The Edmonton Oilers are also -110 favourites against the Vancouver Canucks. Season previews are starting to be released, and it could be a dog fight in the east. Depending on how training camp goes, it’s anyone’s race.
